An update on the future of VFD
More for going paid... and hats, too.
Howdy, this is an update on changes to VFD. Read on for info on: an October sale, paid member perks, merch, growth, and “the rest”.
We are a few months out from the soft rebrand of VFD and things are good.
I knew I would always have to transition from a newsletter that publishes interview transcripts to something more in my own image, but it was also something I loathed and worked against. Mostly because that would’ve meant making a bet on myself. But I am a gambling man. And here we are.
There are about 2,000 of you now – which is not huge in the scope of “the newsletter economy” but it is huge when so many of you have arrived since that shift. Within that growth, the open rate of VFD editions has been around or over 50%. So allow me to say: thank you.
You may have noticed I have done one major thing since the change: all VFD posts are free, now, for seven days. Following this, they are switched to paid-access only. It is my hope that this allows paid members access to the archives, and adds something of value to that relationship.
But what else can we do? Here is what it coming: A weekly, member’s only email filled with recommended reading, viewing, and engaging links.
Starting tomorrow, paid members will receive this extra email. VFD Member’s Links will go out every Monday (AEST time) and #1 will be free to give everyone a taste, before future editions are paywalled.
I am also in the process of getting some merch made, because enough of you have asked me, and also because I want to. Why not? It’s not all that expensive. I like hats. We’re heading into Summer.

The annual subscription: $50 AUD
Monthly subscription: $5 AUD
Super Cool Supporter: $200 annually. This is mostly reserved for the very rich or the very kind supporters of VFD. Also, I will send you merch as and when made (current ETA November for hats).
What you get:
VFD Member’s links - A weekly email which will include links and things from across the internet. The comment section will be open, and I encourage paid members to link their own best finds from the week – and ask questions or demand answers about anything.
