Great read! Joan is so articulate and interesting. She's achieved so much at such a young age - and as someone only a couple years in her junior, that drives me crazy haha.

"The more problems you face, the more you innovate".- I honestly hadn't considered how our COVID response would impact innovation etc. It really does have the potential to leave us lagging. It will be interesting to see how the US evolves tech wise in the next few years as as response to COVID and if Australia actually has the impetus to keep up.

it will be super interesting... imagining a future where we get surpassed in innovation because COVID is solved here, perhaps? But also, given the vaccine rollouts maybe that wont matter. Still, it's something I'll be thinking about a lot. That line about finding metrics that are unique to your role, too... it's something i think a lot of media / tech australians could learn from

It's definitely something I struggle with in my work. I'm in digital and definitely find there is a demand for more reach etc without there being a true understanding of what that means. I liked Joan's comments about having 1000 true fans. It's similar to what Sara Yasin said last week about the impact of an article being more important than how many people read it. I've just got to figure out how to measure this impact - it's a lot easier to just rattle off some numbers and graphs when reporting aha.

An excellent interview! Joan is an amazing human, they have so much clarity around the goodness in thoughtful living and the value of kindness. Their take on business survival is one I hope others can follow. This read was a great start to the day, thanks!

Couldn't agree more. Joan has such... ordered thoughts? Her ability to answer a question but list out her reasoning is something I try to do better all the time, and her life has been wild. Definitely have to agree with the thoughts on sticking it out (at least I hope!)
